Abstract :
For solving the problem of long term congestion, adjusting the network topology is the most practical method. This paper presents a quantitative scheme for evaluating and improving the performance of network topology. First, from the status of a network, we define a set of evaluation indexes and propose the strategies based on the indexes. According to the evaluating results, we adjust the network topology using the proposed scheme. The network topology is improved by enlarging the buffer size of switching nodes, increasing the bandwidth of links, and reapportioning the link connections. From a network managerʹs view, the network topology must be evaluated based on the performance of the entire network. Therefore, we choose three parameters for evaluating the effectiveness of this strategy in improving network topology: throughput, packet delay time and packet loss ratio. Finally, simulations are used to verify that the proposed scheme does improve network topology. The results show that the entire network throughput is increased and the packet delay and packet loss ratio are reduced.
