Abstract
A two-step hybrid method is described for computationally efficient estimation of neutron and gammaray skyshine doses far from a shielded source. First, the energy and angular dependence of radiation escaping into the atmosphere from a source containment is determined by a detailed transport model such as MCNP. Then, an effective point source with this energy and angular dependence is used in the integral line-beam method to transport the radiation through the atmosphere up to 2500 m from the source. An example spent-fuel storage cask is analyzed with this hybrid method and compared to detailed MCNP skyshine calculations.
