Abstract
This paper proposes a theoretical description of how hedges influence crop yields via a combination of microclimatic and competition effects. The usual way of determining the economic benefit of hedges may be too conservative in that no proper allowance is made for normal edge effects. A practical example illustrates the theoretical derivation, which is derived from temperate-climate data but may be universally applicable.
