Abstract :
This paper is concerned with how the superposition principle can be applied to the determination of steady state 3-D ac Field Distributions. All the electrodes of the configuration being calculated are considered to be set at alternating voltages of the same frequency but with possible different amplitudes and phases. The field distribution is calculated for a succession of time instants. Instead of calculating a new charge distribution on the electrode surfaces each time, a basis set of charge distributions is determined. Afterwards, the application of the superposition principle allows the calculation of the field for a given phase state of the voltages without having to solve a new field problem. The method developed is applied to the calculation of the electric field maxima for two 3-phase conductor arrangements. Balanced or unbalanced voltages can be considered with ease. The examples were calculated using the charge simulation and surface charge methods. The application of the method presented here results in important computation time savings.
