Abstract
Experimental and numerical methods based on the torsion test are developed in order to characterize multimaterials obtained by deposit, coating and polymerization of layers by layers. In this paper, we First describe the thermal projection as a method for material elaboration: then. the theory of torsion with and without warping of the section is developed, and finally experimental results of the torsion test on plasma-sprayed copper are presented. From these results, numerical simulations have been performed. Particular attention is focused on the modelization of the superposition of traction and torsion stresses produced during the test. We show in this study that by taking into account the warping of the section, the torsion problem of the structure is complex. The modulus and the shear resistance of the plasma-sprayed copper are derived from the experimental methods, taking into account the multiaxial character of the torsion test. Although numerical and experimental results are quantitatively pessimistic for the great deformations, they remain qualitatively coherent and conform to the continuum mechanics estimates. © 1999 Elsevier Science Ltd.
