Abstract :
This study takes a challenging engineering approach to refurbish an unserviceable ice storage air conditioning system. In 2003, the systemʹs performance was evaluated by conducting an onsite system diagnostics test. At first, the chillerʹs coefficient of performance (COP) and power consumption of the plant were recorded as baselines for comparison. Secondly, the ice-storage system was renovated, which is the main theme of this paper. Lastly, the completely renovated AC system was commissioned and fine-tuned to achieve system optimization. The benefits of this renovation process have been assessed technically and economically in order to justify its potential for wider engineering applications.
A yearlong energy audit has revealed that the system provides an extra 300 RT steady cooling source, to meet demand effectively. This validated the renovation process technically and economically.
