Abstract :
Paper materials, filter paper, foolscap paper, newspaper and office paper contribute largely towards organic-based waste. These materials were incubated with cellulase from Penicillium funiculosum. In order to increase the extent of glucose formation from the cellulose components, all were treated prior to enzymatic-catalyzed hydrolysis. Homogenization, heat and ultrasonification were treatments applied, followed by incubation with different cellulase concentrations. Foolscap paper showed the highest susceptibility to saccharification, followed by filter paper, newspaper and office paper. Homogenization of all materials before treatment with different cellulase concentrations resulted in an increased glucose formation, but newspaper was the only cellulosic material exhibiting an increased degree of saccharification after all the applied pretreatments and hydrolysis with the different cellulase concentrations.
