Abstract :
Rates of mass transfer between an aqueous layer and a mercury pool upon which an axial jet is impinging under turbulent flow conditions were measured by the limiting current technique. Variables studied were jet solution velocity, nozzle diameter, distance between nozzle and mercury pool and physical properties of the solution. The data were correlated by the equation The experimental Re exponent agrees fairly with the prediction of the model presented in this study. Mass transfer data obtained for the combined gas sparging and axial jetting were found to fit the equation Possible practical applications of the above results in metallurgy, biotechnology and electrochemical reactor design were highlighted.
