Abstract
The notion of invariants associated with differential equations introduced in Part I is used to compute
consistent local errors in a finite-element analysis. The procedure is illustrated by two simple examples-a
one-dimensional beam problem and a two-dimensional membrane problem. It is also shown how the
computed errors may be used for adaptive mesh refinement. However, the primary intent of this paper is to
introduce a new concept for calculation of local errors.
