Abstract
This paper discusses the optimal design of foundations subjected to dynamic loading, using the 8nite
element method to determine the responses of the system. A three-dimensional 8nite element programme
for dynamic analysis in time domain has been developed using Newmark’s integration scheme for
the discretization in time domain. In order to consider the in8nite extent of the foundation domain,
uni8ed boundary condition has been adopted. Only linear material behaviour is included at present. The
design variables arethedime nsions of thefoundation whiletheconstraints areamplitude s, acceleration,
velocities and frequencies of the system. The results of the numerical examples show that the foundations
subjected to dynamic loading can be designed both economically and e@ectively using the proposed
method
