Abstract :
Isolates of wheat yellow mosaic virus "WYMV# were collected from 00 sites in China and the 2?!terminal por! tions of RNA0 "including the coat protein coding region# were ampli_ed by reverse transcriptase!polymerase chain reaction and sequenced[ No fragment could be ampli_ed from one isolate although WYMV was shown to be present[ The sequences of the remaining 09 isolates were compared with other published sequences[ The isolates sequenced all had a coat protein coding region of 768 nucleotides and had 85[6 88[8) nucleotides identical to other isolates and between 9 and 00 amino acid di}er! ences between them[ Unusually for a virus in the family Potyviridae\ these di}erences were mostly in the central region[ A consensus amino acid sequence for all bymo! viruses was constructed[ The 2?!UTR sequences had from 144 to 148 nucleotides with 85[8!099) identical nucleo! tides between them[
