Poverty, economic growth, and average exit time

A simple transformation of the Watts poverty index yields a “meaningful” measure with appealing ordinal properties and a natural interpretation in terms of the potential for economic growth to alleviate poverty. The index is illustrated with data from Bangladesh and Bolivia.
