Identifying the sign of the slope of a monotonic function via OLS

This paper derives a necessary and sufficient condition for identifying the sign of the derivative of an unknown monotonic function by the method of weighted average derivatives. While OLS has a weighted average derivative representation, it does not necessarily satisfy the condition except for restrictive cases.
