The determinants of international knowledge diffusion as measured by patent citations

This paper uses patent citations to measure international diffusion of technological knowledge. It finds that diffusion is enhanced by physical and technological proximity and by sharing a common language. While FDI is positively associated with diffusion, trade facilitates diffusion only when countriesʹ inventions are similarly distributed across technical fields.
