Nappe pressures on gravity dam spillways

When concrete gravity spillways are required to pass flood flows in excess of their design discharges, the hydrodynamic forces produced by the overflowing nappe can have a large impact on structural stability. This paper discusses a technique for approximating the nappe pressures on spillways of arbitrary shape and determining the effect of these pressures on structural stability.
