Abstract :
The purpose of this paper is to calculate the bone ~uid pressure in the lacunar canalicular porosity of the cortical bone matrix induced by functional mechanical loading and compare it with that induced by the blood pressure di}erences[ This problem reduces to the problem of determining the bone ~uid pressure in a representative axially compressed osteon which is approximately an annular cylindrical structure[ Two available poroelastic approximations\ a beam analogy model and a single osteon model\ are compared and discussed[ We _nd that ] "0# at the lacunar canalicular porosity of a typical load!carrying long bone\ normal physiological loading induces a bone ~uid pressure that is at least 39 times larger than that induced by the blood pressure di}erences ^ "1# the solutions of the beam analogy model and the single osteon model approach each other as the exterior!to!interior radius ratio of the osteon approaches one[ 0887 Elsevier Science Ltd[ All rights reserved
