Abstract
Dynamic stability of uniform straining of a nonlinear elastic solid is known to require that all eigenvalues of the
acoustic tensor associated with the tangent elastic moduli be real and nonnegative. The focus of this note is to what
extent this conclusion applies to time-independent, elastoplastic materials. Nonlinearity of the elastic–plastic constitutive
law imposes limits on validity of a solution to the linear problem for which the acoustic tensor is determined. The
effect of those limits on the conclusions about instability is examined
