Abstract :
Purpose
To examine the association between body mass index (BMI) and the plasma level of a lipid peroxidation biomarker in a large sample of elderly healthy Asian population. This cross-sectional study included 1150 community-dwelling Japanese aged 70 years or older in 2002.
Methods
We measured the lipid peroxidation biomarker 8-iso-prostaglandin F2α (8-iso-PGF2α) using the ELISA method. We also measured the weight and height and calculated the BMI as weight (kg)/height (m)2.
Results
After adjustment for potential confounders, the mean ± SE plasma 8-iso-PGF2α level was significantly higher in subjects with higher BMI: 21.1 ± 0.8 pg/ml in those with BMI of 30.0 or more; 20.5 ± 0.3 pg/ml in those with BMI between 25.0 and 29.9; 20.0 ± 0.2 pg/ml in those with BMI between 18.5 and 24.9; and 19.0 ± 0.7 pg/ml in those with BMI of less than 18.5 (p for trend = 0.011).
Conclusions
Our results demonstrated that in the healthy Asian population, there was a modest but significant relationship between BMI and the plasma lipid peroxidation level.
