Abstract
Primary intracerebral haemorrhage accounts for higher proportion of stroke cases in Asia than in Europe or America. There is no consensus regarding the surgical evacuation of primary basal ganglion haematoma. This study was undertaken for the first time in developing country like India to evaluate the results of stereotactic evacuation of haematoma and formulate the proper guidelines. This procedure was performed in 50 patients under local anesthesia using the backlund haematoma evacuation kit. About 80% of the haematoma was evacuated and a catheter was left for the urokinase instillation till the complete resolution of haematoma. The associated intraventricular haemorrhage was managed by draining them externally and using urokinase.
