RETRACTED: Laparoscopic cholecystectomy and unsuspected gallbladder cancer

Reason: The Editor-in-Chief and Editorial Team of European Journal of Surgical Oncology very much regret that it has become necessary to retract this article formally. The journal was recently alerted to the fact that it duplicates substantial sections from an article previously published in Seminars of Surgical Oncology (Box, J.C., and Edge, S.B. Laparoscopic cholecystectomy and unsuspected gallbladder cancer. Semin. Surg. Oncol., 16 (1999) 327–331). The authors have been contacted but we have not received a satisfactory explanation for the remarkable similarities between the two papers. Their institution will be informed. Modern plagiarism detection software systems now allow very detailed comparative analysis of submitted texts to be made. They are being introduced widely by publishers and are also being used by independent and academic verification teams. All authors are reminded of the importance of originality in their contributions and of appropriate acknowledgement where text and other forms of intellectual property are used directly from other sources. European Journal of Surgical Oncology has strict policies on publication ethics and takes seriously any breach of these policies. The journal published this article in good faith and the Editor-in-Chief and Editorial Team apologise to the authors of the papers.
