This week The Lancet joins 36 medical journals in 21 countries to highlight the prevailing threats from emerging infectious diseases. On p175, Lee Reichman discusses the ways in which we will guarantee a global resurgence in tuberculosis, while on p154 MacLean and colleagues describe a new human disease caused by the NorthAmerican liver fluke, Metorchis conjunctus. One important social force driving this dangerous trend is considered below.
