Abstract :
Models of the geomagnetic field predict the presence of a minimum in the magnetic field strength located in the vicinity of the magnetopause in the region of the outer cusp. Such a field configuration may be a trap for charged particles, as it is in the region of the magnetic equator of the inner magnetosphere. In this paper, experimental evidence for the presence of trapped ions with energies from 10 to 25 keV in the region of the outer northern cusp is presented. The spatial distribution of these particles, which is in agreement with the predicted location of the magnetic field minimum, is presented. The work is carried out using the data of the INTERBALL-1 spacecraft.
