Abstract :
A method for the identification of plasma regimes on the basis of experimental data is proposed. The data are sorted according to the ranges of the variations of magnetic field values, the sunward-directed flux of energetic protons, and their variations along the trajectory, which are typical of the basic plasma regimes of the middle tail of the magnetosphere. Data of the INTERBALL-1 satellite are analyzed that correspond to measurements of the MIF-M and DOK-2 instruments in October and December 1997, at geocentric distances of not less than 10 R(E)- Cluster analysis was used for sorting. The results are checked using the data of measurements by the CORALL ion energy-angle spectrometer. The time intervals and corresponding segments of the trajectory were obtained when the satellite was situated inside a region of definite plasma regime. The main stages of the application of the identification method are considered.
