Purpoe To invetigate an outbreak of echoviru-related keratoconjunctiviti. Method We undertook a retropective tudy of recent cae of echoviru infection with recall and further evaluation of conjunctiviti patient. All patient from whom an echoviru wa iolated in Liverpool during 1995 were included. The natural coure of ocular echoviru dieae wa tudied, including the likelihood of echoviru keratoconjunctiviti being linked with meningiti and the rik of long-term carriage of the viru in the conjunctiva. Reult Of 10 unrelated patient with echoviru conjunctiviti, ix alo had a mild keratiti. None of thee patient developed meningiti, and no cae of long-term carriage in the conjunctiva were encountered. There wa no link between cae of echoviru meningiti and conjunctiviti. There wa no correponding increae in other ocular viral iolate. Concluion Echoviru i a relatively unrecognized caue of keratoconjunctiviti. Echoviral keratoconjunctiviti appear to be an independent ocular event unaociated with ytemic equelae. Long-term carriage in the conjunctiva doe not appear to occur.
