Abstract
Purpoe
To invetigate the diagnotic potential of multifocal electroretinography for the evaluation of retinal affection by retiniti pigmentoa in a clinical etting.
Method
For thi propective tudy, multifocal electroretinogram were obtained from 38 patient who matched the incluion criteria of either a detectable photopic Ganzfeld repone or viual field of 10 degree or more, and from 30 normal volunteer. Recording were performed with the viual evoked repone imaging ytem, uing a reolution of 61 hexagonal element within a 30-degree viual field. The reult of the left eye of each patient and control ubject were ued for tatitical evaluation by the Mann-Whitney U tet.
Reult
The 38 eligible patient included thoe with Uher yndrome type I and II (one patient and ix patient, repectively) and thoe with autoomal-receive (18), X-receive (two), and autoomal-dominant (11) form of retiniti pigmentoa. In 27 (71%) of thee 38 patient, at leat a central repone of the multifocal electroretinogram wa detectable. Lo of multifocal electroretinogram repone denity in patient with retiniti pigmentoa wa ignificant (P <.00001) in all five eccentricity group (concentric ring), with a progreion from center to periphery. Implicit time wa ignificantly elevated in the third eccentricity group (P <.0038) and increaed further toward the periphery (P <.00001). The reult did not differ notably between retiniti pigmentoa ubgroup.
Concluion
Becaue the multifocal electroretinogram differentiate between affected and nonaffected retinal area, eccentricity-dependent change in both amplitude and implicit time were found. It can therefore add to the diagnotic information of many patient with retiniti pigmentoa.
