Abstract
Purpoe
To ae the mean thickne and urface area of human clera.
Method
Fifty-five formalin-fixed eye bank eye were hemiected from anterior to poterior. Cro-ectional lide were taken to include a millimeter cale ruler in each photograph. lide photograph were projected and the cleral ilhouette ketched. Mean cleral thickne meaurement with tandard deviation were obtained. Twenty-five human eye bank eye were ued to determine total cleral urface area by either a computerized tracing method (17 globe) or volumetric calculation (eight globe) uing fluid diplacement.
Reult
Mean cleral thickne ± D wa 0.53 ± 0.14 mm at the corneocleral limbu, ignificantly decreaing to 0.39 ± 0.17 mm near the equator, and increaing to 0.9 to 1.0 mm near the optic nerve. The mean total cleral urface area by urface area computerized tracing wa 16.3 ± 1.8 cm2 and, by the volume diplacement method, wa 17.0 ± 1.5 cm2.
Concluion
cleral thickne and urface area meaurement from cadaver eye are important for ophthalmic urgeon and have implication for trancleral diffuion.
