Abstract :
Purpoe To invetigate effect of cataract extraction and intraocular len placement on the viual field of eye with chronic open-angle glaucoma. Method A retropective review wa conducted of 41 eye of 41 patient with viually ignificant cataract and chronic open-angle glaucoma who had undergone automated tatic perimetry within 6 month before and 6 month after phaco-emulification with intraocular len placement. Reult Comparion of preoperative and pot-operative teting howed that the mean viual acuity, foveal threhold, and mean deviation improved ignificantly (P < .0001), while the mean pattern tandard deviation and corrected pattern tandard deviation worened ignificantly (P ≤ .03). Eye not receiving miotic preoperatively did not have a ignificant potoperative change in the mean pattern and corrected pattern tandard deviation. Increaing everity of glaucoma-related viual field lo wa ignificantly aociated with le improvement in the potoperative mean deviation (P = .0001). Only two (5%) of 41 eye had worening of the mean deviation of 1.0 dB or greater. The foveal threhold improved more than the mean deviation did but not ignificantly more, except in eye with evere viual field lo. Concluion Cataract extraction reulted in tatitically ignificant improvement in viual acuity and foveal threhold in mot eye with glaucoma. In eye with mild or moderate glaucoma-related damage, the mean deviation often improved ignificantly after cataract extraction, but improvement wa le predictable in eye with evere or end-tage damage. The pattern and corrected pattern tandard deviation may be reliable indicator of glaucoma-related damage in eye with cataract but without contricted pupil.
