Percutaneou treatment of an orbital hydatid cyt: a new therapeutic approach

Purpoe: To decribe the percutaneou treatment of an orbital hydatid cyt a an alternative approach to conventional urgery. Method: In a 21-year-old man with diplopia and right proptoi, radiologic tudie dicloed a 25 × 25 × 20-mm purely cytic ma in the right retrobulbar area. Baed on the preumptive diagnoi of hydatid cyt, the cyt wa treated percutaneouly under ultraonographic guidance with apiration, 15% hypertonic aline injection, and reapiration without any complication. Reult: A ubtantial decreae in the ize of the cyt wa oberved in the 3 month after treatment. Nine month after treatment, the hrunken cyt had a volume of only 0.5 ml, and the patient wa aymptomatic. Twenty-one month after the procedure, the finding were conitent with thoe at 9 month of follow-up. Concluion: Percutaneou treatment of orbital hydatid cyt, which i more atifactory to both the patient and the phyician, may be a afe and effective alternative to urgical extirpation.
