Laer pointer–induced macular injury

PURPOE: To report a patient with a macular injury caued by a laer pointing device. METHOD: Cae report. A healthy 34-year-old man wa examined 2 day after he deliberately gazed into the beam of a laer-pointing device with hi left eye for an etimated 30 to 60 econd. Hi uncorrected viual acuity in each eye wa 20/20. He reported a tranient central cotoma in the left eye and headache after laer expoure. REULT: Both eye were unremarkable except for a focal retinal pigment epithelial diturbance at the naal edge of the fovea in the left eye. Fundu fluorecein angiography demontrated window- defect type hyperfluoreence in the ame location. CONCLUION: Laer-pointing device may caue macular injury when ued inappropriately. Conformance with conumer afety recommendation hould minimize potential hazard.
