Abstract :
PURPOE: To evaluate longitudinally the optic dik morphology of nonglaucomatou optic nerve damage econdary to retinal nerve fiber damage, uing experimental central retinal artery occluion in rheu monkey eye a a model.
METHOD: Thi propective tudy included 24 eye of 16 monkey. In eight eye of eight animal, central retinal artery occluion wa produced by clamping the central retinal artery in the retrobulbar pace. Occluion wa verified by fluorecein fundu angiography. The ame eye at baeline a well a the eight contralateral healthy eye and eight monkey eye with experimental high-preure glaucoma erved a control group. erially taken optic dik photograph were morphometrically evaluated.
REULT: The area and hape of the neuroretinal rim and alpha zone and beta zone of parapapillary chorioretinal atrophy of eye after central retinal artery occluion did not vary ignificantly (P > .30) from the ame eye before central retinal artery occluion nor from the normal contralateral eye. In the glaucomatou eye, the neuroretinal rim wa ignificantly (P < .001) maller and parapapillary atrophy ignificantly (P = .01) larger than in the eye after central retinal artery occluion.
CONCLUION: Experimental central retinal artery occluion, in contrat to glaucoma, doe not markedly change the ize and hape of parapapillary atrophy and neuroretinal rim; thi confirm previou clinical tudie. Thu, aement of parapapillary atrophy and neuroretinal rim may be helpful to differentiate between glaucomatou optic neuropathy and nonglaucomatou optic neuropathy econdary to retinal nerve fiber damage. Parapapillary atrophy i independent of decreaed retinal blood perfuion and development of nonglaucomatou optic nerve atrophy following experimental central retinal artery occluion.
