Abstract :
PURPOE: We report cro-ectional image of diabetic macular edema and correlation between tomographic feature and viual acuity with bet correction by mean of optical coherence tomography.
METHOD: In a propective tudy, optical coherence tomography wa performed in 59 eye of 42 patient with diabetic macular edema and in 10 eye of 10 normal control ubject.
REULT: Optical coherence tomography howed three pattern of tructural change in diabetic macular edema: ponge-like retinal welling (52 [88%] of 59 eye), cytoid macular edema (28 [47%] of 59 eye), and erou retinal detachment (9 [15%] of 59 eye). ome eye had more than one pathologic change. Retinal welling wa more pronounced in the outer rather than the inner retinal layer. Cytoid macular edema wa located mainly in the outer retinal layer. In eye with long-tanding cytoid macular edema, cytoid pace had fued, reulting in a large cytoid cavity involving almot the entire retinal layer. Hard exudate were een a highly reflective area located in the outer retinal layer. The retinal thickne at the central fovea and the viual acuity with bet correction howed an intermediate negative correlation in eye without cytoid macular edema (correlation coefficient: −0.61, P < .01).
CONCLUION: Diabetic macular edema involved three tructural change, including ponge-like retinal welling (88%), cytoid macular edema (47%), and erou retinal detachment (15%). Viual acuity with bet correction moderately correlated with retinal thickne regardle of the different tomographic feature.
