Abstract :
PURPOE: To report a erie of patient with uveiti and cataract who had undergone cataract extraction with poterior chamber intraocular len implantation and who ubequently had the intraocular len removed becaue of progreive intraocular damage from inflammation.
METHOD: Review of the record of 19 patient after removal of a poterior chamber intraocular len. The deciion to perform urgery wa baed on tandard criteria after evaluation at a ingle uveiti referral center.
REULT: The complication leading to intraocular len removal were perilental membrane (eight eye), chronic low-grade inflammation not reponding to anti-inflammatory treatment (eight eye), and cyclitic membrane reulting in hypotony and maculopathy (three eye). After intraocular len removal the inflammation ubided and the viual acuity improved or tabilized in 14 of the 19 eye. The caue of further reduction in the viual acuity of the other five patient were macular edema (two patient), maculopathy reulting from hypotony (one patient), retinal detachment (one patient), and vitreou hemorrhage (one patient).
CONCLUION: Intraocular len implantation can form part of a reaonable plan for viual rehabilitation of patient with uveitic cataract, but incluion of an intraocular len in the plan i not alway in the overall long-term bet interet of the patient. Intraocular len removal may alvage ueful viion for patient who continue to exhibit complication econdary to uveiti after cataract extraction and intraocular len implantation, provided the intraocular len i removed before irreparable damage ha been done to macula or optic nerve.
