Abstract :
PURPOE: To determine whether volumetric calculation of enucleation implant ize improve the reult of the enucleation procedure. METHOD: The volume of the enucleated globe wa meaured in 33 eye of 33 patient, allowing intraoperative calculation of implant ize. The degree of potoperative anophthalmic volume deficit wa evaluated by determining the relative enophthalmic poition of the implant uing Hertel exophthalmometry. Thee reult were compared with thoe obtained from two group of hitorical control patient who had previouly undergone enucleation with the inertion of tandard ize 18-mm or 20-mm implant. REULT: There wa ignificant variability in the volume of “normal” ize globe (range, 7.0 to 9.0 ml; mean, 7.9 ml; tandard deviation [D], 0.7), reulting in the placement of implant between 18 to 22 mm in diameter. tudy patient undergoing volumetric determination of implant ize demontrated le implant enophthalmo (mean, 5.9 mm) than hitorical control patient who received 18-mm (mean, 8.5 mm; P = .0001) or 20-mm (mean, 6.8 mm, P = .0332) implant. CONCLUION: Volumetric determination and individualization of enucleation implant ize appear to reduce potoperative anophthalmic volume deficit.
