Abstract :
PURPOE:
To invetigate in an exploratory tudy whether any evidence ugget that ophthalmic ichemic diorder, particularly of the optic nerve head, are aociated with hearing lo.
METHOD:
We invetigated propectively 583 conecutive patient in eight primary ocular diagnotic group for aociated hearing lo: nonarteritic anterior ichemic optic neuropathy (n = 81), normal-tenion glaucoma (n = 36), primary open-angle glaucoma (n = 138), other type of glaucoma (n = 142), ocular arterial occluive diorder (n = 22), retinal vein occluion (n = 89), ocular vaculiti (n = 42), and a micellaneou group (n = 33). The patient and their relative were quetioned in detail for any evidence of hearing lo in the patient.
REULT: In the logitic regreion model, with preence or abence of hearing lo a the dependent variable and gender, age, and diagnoi a independent variable, gender (P = .003) and age (P < .0001) were found to be ignificantly aociated with hearing lo. No ignificant aociation wa found with any of the ophthalmic dieae group evaluated in thi tudy. Whenever any ignificant aociation with any ophthalmic dieae group wa een, thi reult could be explained by examination of the aociation between diagnoi and age, which howed a ignificant (P < .001) aociation.
CONCLUION: Thi tudy howed that there i a ignificant (P < .001) relationhip between hearing lo and aging—the older the population, the higher the incidence of hearing lo—but the tudy howed that there i no aociation between hearing lo and ocular and optic nerve head ichemic diorder. The two repreent unrelated and independent diorder.
