PURPOE: Adenoviru type 34 belong to adenoviru ubgenu B. The prototype viru of adenoviru 34 wa iolated from a renal tranplant recipient. However, no cae of acute conjunctiviti caued by adenoviru 34 ha been reported. Recently, we encountered two cae of acute follicular conjunctiviti in which adenoviru 34 wa iolated. METHOD: The clinical iolate were identified by the tandard neutralization tet. The equence of even hypervariable region in the hexon protein of thee cae were compared with thoe of everal prototype train of adenoviru ubgenu B. REULT: The cae were middle-aged, 34 and 41 year old, and male, and they exhibited moderate conjunctiviti with upper repiratory tract ymptom. Iolate from cell culture were identified a adenoviru 34 by NT. The mean homology rate (percentage of total number of coincident amino acid in the total length of amino acid in even hypervariable region) between clinical iolate and the adenoviru 34 prototype wa 96.5%; in contrat, thoe between clinical iolate and the prototype of adenoviru 11, adenoviru 14, and adenoviru 35 were 55.6%, 66.7%, and 57.9%, repectively. The reult of conventional erotyping by neutralization tet were confirmed by thee value. CONCLUION: Thee reult indicate that adenoviru 34 may induce acute conjunctiviti in immunocompetent ubject and that pecial attention hould be paid to adenoviru 34 a a cauative agent for adenoviral conjunctiviti.
