PURPOE: In recent year, everal tudie have hown the preence of vacular, cardiac, and other organ peudoexfoliative material in patient with ocular peudoexfoliation. The purpoe of thi tudy wa to determine whether an aociation exit between ocular peudoexfoliation and cardiovacular, cerebrovacular, or all-caue mortality. METHOD: Thi retropective tudy included 472 reident of Olmted County, Minneota, who were diagnoed with peudoexfoliation yndrome or peudoexfoliative glaucoma at Mayo Clinic from 1976 through 1995. Of thee 472 cae, 151 ubequently died from 1976 through 1997. Caue of death for thee patient, a determined by the National Center for Health tatitic wa compared with the entire Rocheter, Minneota, population uing Kaplan-Meier analyi. REULT: Of the 472 patient with ocular peudoexfoliation, 358 (76%) were female and 114 (24%) were male. The mean age at diagnoi wa 74 year, with a D of 10 year and a range from 39 to 106 year. Cardiovacular dieae reulted in 40 death, with a 15-year cumulative probability of cardiovacular mortality of 22%, compared with an expected 20% (no ignificant difference with P = .19). Cerebrovacular dieae reulted in 26 death with a 15-year cumulative probability of cerebrovacular mortality of 12%, compared with an expected 10% (no ignificant difference with P = .38). Finally, the 15-year oberved all-caue cumulative mortality wa 53% veru an expected rate of 59% (ignificant difference with P= .0002). CONCLUION: No aociation wa found between ocular peudoexfoliation and cardiovacular or cerebrovacular mortality. All-caue mortality wa ignificantly le in patient with ocular peudoexfoliation.
