Abstract :
PURPOE: To evaluate the relationhip between viual function and retinal nerve fiber layer meaurement obtained with canning laer polarimetry and optical coherence tomography in a maked, propective trial. METHOD: Conecutive normal, ocular hypertenive, and glaucomatou ubject who met incluion and excluion criteria were evaluated. Complete ophthalmologic examination, dik photography, canning laer polarimetry, optical coherence tomography, and automated achromatic perimetry were performed. REULT: eventy-eight eye of 78 patient (17 normal, 23 ocular hypertenive, and 38 glaucomatou) were enrolled (mean age, 56.8 ± 11.5 year; range, 26 to 75 year). Eye with glaucoma had ignificantly greater neural network core on canning laer polarimetry and lower maximum modulation, ellipe modulation, and mean retinal nerve fiber layer thickne meaured with optical coherence tomography compared with normal and ocular hypertenive eye, repectively (all P< .005). ignificant aociation were oberved between neural network number (r = −.51, r = .03), maximum modulation (r = .39, r = −.32), ellipe modulation (r = .36, r = −.28), and optical coherence tomography–generated retinal nerve fiber layer thickne (r = .68, r = −.59) and viual field mean deviation and corrected pattern tandard deviation, repectively. All canning laer polarimetry parameter were ignificantly aociated with optical coherence tomography–generated retinal nerve fiber layer thickne. CONCLUION: Optical coherence tomography and canning laer polarimetry were capable of differentiating glaucomatou from nonglaucomatou population in thi cohort; however coniderable meaurement overlap wa oberved among normal, ocular hypertenive, and glaucomatou eye. Retinal nerve fiber layer tructural meaurement demontrated good correlation with viual function, and retinal nerve fiber layer thickne by optical coherence tomography correlated with retardation meaurement by canning laer polarimetry.
