Abstract :
PURPOE:
To decribe the clinical feature and complication of diabetic retinopathy, viual acuity, and number of repeat treatment after panretinal photocoagulation for proliferative diabetic retinopathy in a tertiary care center.
METHOD:
A cohort tudy wa conducted with data collection from medical record of patient undergoing panretinal photocoagulation between 1985 and 1995 at the cheie Eye Intitute; 297 eye of 186 patient were eligible for tudy.
REULT:
The preence of neovacularization of the dik at baeline, an earlier onet of diabete, and a horter duration of dieae before panretinal photocoagulation were the tronget rik factor for needing an additional panretinal photocoagulation treatment. ixty-two percent of eye with poor viual acuity (≤20/200) at baeline till had poor viual acuity at 1 year, and 76% with good viual acuity (≥20/40) at baeline maintained good viual acuity at 1 year. Poor viion at baeline wa the only rik factor for having poor viion at 1 year. Vitreou hemorrhage wa preent in 44% of eye at baeline. New vitreou hemorrhage developed in 37% of eye during the firt year after panretinal photocoagulation. A traction retinal detachment wa preent in 4% of eye at baeline and newly developed in 6% of eye during follow-up. A repeat panretinal photocoagulation treatment wa performed in 39% of eye after initial treatment. A vitrectomy wa performed in 10% of eye from baeline through the 1-year follow-up viit.
CONCLUION:
The data from thi tudy are ueful for couneling patient with repect to likely viual outcome, poibility of major complication from proliferative diabetic retinopathy, and the chance of undergoing additional laer treatment after panretinal photocoagulation.
