Abstract :
PURPOE:
To decribe a patient who developed oxacillin-reitant taphylococcu aureu endophthalmiti after inertion of a ganciclovir intraocular implant.
METHOD:
Cae report.
REULT:
A 42-year-old man with acquired immunodeficiency yndrome (AID) and a hitory of cytomegaloviru retiniti wa admitted with right-ided eye pain and decreaed viual acuity 10 day after receiving a econd ganciclovir intraocular implant in the right eye. A therapeutic vitrectomy, right eye, wa performed on the day of admiion. A vitreal tap produced frank pu and white, fluffy debri. Culture of the vitreal fluid grew oxacillin-reitant aureu, enitive only to vancomycin, rifampin, and trimethoprim/ulfamethoxazole. The patient wa uccefully treated with removal of both ganciclovir implant in the right eye and a 4-week coure of vancomycin and rifampin. However, the infection left the patient blind in the infected eye.
CONCLUION:
Bacterial endophthalmiti i an infrequent but eriou complication of the ganciclovir intraocular implant.
