Abstract
PURPOE:
To compare the viual outcome, percentage of poterior capular opacification, and laer capulotomy rate with polymethylmethacrylate, ilicone, and hydrogel intraocular len implant at 1 and 2 year potoperatively.
METHOD:
Ninety-three eye of 93 patient were randomized to receive a polymethylmethacrylate, ilicone, or hydrogel intraocular len implant. A tandardized urgical protocol wa followed by a ingle urgeon uing phacoemulification with capulorhexi; any patient with urgical complication were excluded, and all patient received tandardized medication and follow-up. Patient were examined at day 1 and 7, month 1, 3, and 6, and year 1 and 2 after urgery. At each aement, bet-corrected logMAR viual acuity and Pelli-Robon contrat enitivity were meaured. Poterior capular opacification wa objectively aeed by digital retroillumination imaging with the ue of a dedicated oftware program and calculated a the percentage area of opacified capule. Laer capulotomy wa performed if the eye had lot 2 line of viual acuity with a clinically opaque capule.
REULT:
At 2 year potoperatively, the mean percentage area of poterior capular opacification for hydrogel lene wa 63%; for polymethylmethacrylate, 46%; and for ilicone, 17%. Hydrogel intraocular lene were aociated with 17% more poterior capule opacification than were polymethylmethacrylate lene (95% confidence interval, 1–33; P = .037) and 45% more than were ilicone lene (95% confidence interval, 33–58; P < .0001) at 2 year. Polymethylmethacrylate lene had 28% more poterior capule opacification than ilicone lene (95% confidence interval, 13–43; P < .0001) at 2 year. Twenty-eight percent of patient with hydrogel intraocular lene required an Nd:YAG laer poterior capulotomy at 2 year, compared with 14% with polymethylmethacrylate, wherea no patient with ilicone lene needed a capulotomy (P = .014). Viual acuity wa not ignificantly different among the three group, but patient with ilicone intraocular lene had ignificantly better contrat enitivity than thoe with hydrogel lene (P = .046).
CONCLUION:
Intraocular lene made of thi pecific hydrogel were aociated with a ignificantly higher degree of poterior capular opacification and more laer capulotomie than polymethylmethacrylate and ilicone intraocular lene
