Abstract :
PURPOE: To evaluate the efficacy and afety of brimonidine compared with dorzolamide given three time daily a monotherapy in patient with primary open-angle glaucoma or ocular hypertenion. METHOD: In a double-maked, multicenter, croover comparion in 40 patient, qualified patient were wahed out from their previou medication and randomized to dorzolamide 2% or brimonidine 0.2% for the firt 6-week treatment period. Patient then were wahed out for 2 week and tarted on the oppoite medication for the econd 6-week period. REULT: Baeline intraocular preure for all 40 ubject (76 eye) wa 24.1 ± 2.0 mm Hg. Thi tudy found that the 8:00 trough intraocular preure after 6 week of therapy for dorzolamide wa 20.7 ± 3.1 mm Hg and for brimonidine 20.8 ± 3.2 mm Hg (P = .99). The peak intraocular preure (2 hour after doing) for dorzolamide wa 18.6 ± 3.4 mm Hg and for brimonidine 17.8 ± 2.7 mm Hg (P = .10 ). Dorzolamide caued more tinging upon intillation (P < .01) and brimonidine more itching (P = .01). No tatitical difference exited between group for ytemic advere event. ix patient, all on brimonidine, were dicontinued from a treatment period early. Of thee, two were dicontinued for inadequate preure control, two with dizzine and fatigue, one with ocular pain, and one for lifetyle reaon (P = .07). CONCLUION: Thi tudy found imilar efficacy and afety between monotherapy treatment with dorzolamide or brimonidine when each wa given three time daily to patient with ocular hypertenion or primary open-angle glaucoma.
