Abstract :
PURPOE: To determine the accuracy of glaucoma detection by frequency-doubling perimetry. METHOD: tereoview optic nerve photograph, viual field examination, intraocular preure meaurement, medical and ocular hitory, and a creening and full threhold frequency-doubling perimetry examination were performed in a propective tudy of conecutive ubject. Incluion criteria included age of 45 year or older, abence of ocular dieae other than glaucoma, cataract, or mild druen, and nellen viual acuity of 20/60 or better. A total of 125 eye in 102 glaucoma ubject and 95 eye of 95 normal ubject were included. Each eye wa claified a “normal,” “glaucoma,” or “uncertain” by each of three ophthalmologit on the bai of all available clinical information with the exception of frequency-doubling perimetry reult. Thoe in the glaucoma group were ubclaified a having early (n = 51), moderate (n = 42), or evere (n = 32) glaucoma on the bai of automated Humphrey viual field criteria. In the glaucoma group, two eye from a ubject were allowed to be included (23 of 102 ubject) if they differed in level of damage becaue they were never analyzed within the ame tatitical analyi. REULT: everal diagnotic algorithm were evaluated. Algorithm baed on the mot depreed ingle point, pair of adjacent point, and cluter of three point performed nearly identically. For the creening tet, if any abnormality wa identified, pecificity wa 95%, wherea enitivity wa 39%, 86%, and 100% for early, moderate, and evere glaucoma, repectively. For the full threhold tet, with at leat one point depreed to the P < 0.5% level, pecificity meaured 91%, wherea enitivity wa 35%, 88%, and 100% for early, moderate, and evere glaucoma, repectively. The two global indice, mean deviation and pattern tandard deviation, were alo evaluated and were generally le accurate. CONCLUION: Frequency-doubling perimetry, which i rapid and eaily adminitered, i effective at detecting moderate and evere dieae and appear well uited for glaucoma creening
