Abstract :
PURPOE: To evaluate long-term rik factor for progreion or tability in patient with primary open-angle glaucoma.
METHOD: We retropectively included conecutively reviewed patient who had primary open-angle glaucoma for at leat 5 year in thi multicenter trial. Hitorical and clinical factor in thee patient were evaluated for their aociation with tability or progreion of the glaucoma.
REULT: We included 218 patient in thi tudy; of thee, 34 progreed over an average length of follow-up of 45.5 ± 30.0 month, and 184 were table over an average of 72.8 ± 18.3 month. The mean intraocular preure over the follow-up period for the progreed group wa 19.5 ± 3.8 mm Hg and for the table group 17.2 ± 3.1 mm Hg (P = .001). The average tandard deviation of individual intraocular preure wa greater in the progreed group (5.1 mm Hg) than the table group (3.9 mm Hg, P = .012). Baeline characteritic indicating a greater potential to progre were a larger cup-to-dik ratio (P < .001), a greater number of medication (P = .02), older age (P .007), and wore viual acuity (P = .003). However, no difference wa oberved in preure level that prevented progreion in thee ubpopulation compared with the total ample ize.
CONCLUION: Thi tudy ugget that lowering the intraocular preure i important in the treatment of primary open-angle glaucoma to help prevent long-term progreion. Lowering the preure, however, i not uniformly effective in preventing progreion. Additionally, rik factor for progreion do not further help identify preure level that prevent worening of glaucoma
