Abstract :
PURPOE: To review recent advance in the baic and clinical biology of Bartonella-related eye dieae.
METHOD: A review of the pertinent medical literature wa performed.
REULT: A number of novel Bartonella pecie have been identified over the pat decade. Of thee, Bartonella henelae, the etiologic agent in cat cratch dieae, i mot often aociated with ocular complication, which may include Parinaud oculoglandular yndrome, neuroretiniti, and focal retinochoroiditi. Although cat and flea expoure appear to be the main rik factor for contracting cat cratch dieae, the diagnoi of ocular bartonelloi relie primarily on the recognition of uggetive clinical ign in conjunction with poitive erologic teting. B. henelae–aociated ocular complication are uually elf-limited but may be treated with doxycycline or erythromycin, with or without rifampin, when the infection are evere or ight-threatening.
CONCLUION: B. henelae infection i common and hould be conidered in patient with Parinaud oculoglandular yndrome, neuroretiniti, or focal retinochoroiditi, particularly when there i a hitory of cat or flea expoure.
