PURPOE: To ummarize finding from health-related quality-of-life interview with patient who had recurrent ubfoveal choroidal neovacularization econdary to age-related macular degeneration and participated in a randomized pilot trial (focal confluent laer photocoagulation veru ubmacular urgery) that may ait in planning future aement of health-related quality of life in patient with age-related macular degeneration. PATIENT AND METHOD: Of 70 patient enrolled in the pilot trial, 54 were interviewed before random aignment to treatment and provided the data analyzed for thi report. Patient were cheduled for follow-up interview at 6, 12, and 24 month after enrollment. The 36-Item hort-Form Health urvey wa ued in all cae and wa adminitered by an interviewer. The ummary cale, Phyical Component ummary and Mental Component ummary, were the focu of thi analyi. REULT: Median Phyical Component ummary and Mental Component ummary core at baeline were 47 and 53, repectively. Ditribution of core at baeline and throughout the 2-year follow-up period were imilar in the two treatment arm and conitent with thoe of a ample of the general U population of imilar age. Ditribution of both Phyical Component ummary core and Mental Component ummary core for individual patient ubgroup at baeline uggeted enitivity to ome meaure of baeline viion. During 2 year of follow-up interview, median change in Phyical Component ummary core were decreae of ix point in the laer arm and three point in the urgery arm; in both treatment arm, median change in Mental Component ummary core wa an increae of 2 point. Two-year change in viual acuity had no dicernible effect on Phyical Component ummary core or Mental Component ummary core; baeline core were the tronget predictor of 2-year change in Phyical Component ummary and Mental Component ummary core. CONCLUION: Overall, ummary core from the 36-Item hort-Form Health urvey and change in core over 2 year in thi pilot trial were conitent with the ophthalmic outcome meaure (reported elewhere) that howed no important difference between the treatment arm. Thee health-related quality-of-life finding provided aurance that the imilarity of ophthalmic outcome in the two treatment arm did not mak change potentially important to patient that were not captured a part of the clinical outcome data.
