Retinal hitopathology of an autopy eye with advanced retiniti pigmentoa in a family with rhodopin Glu181Ly

PURPOE: To compare hitologic finding in an autopy eye of an 84-year-old man with advanced retiniti pigmentoa and rhodopin, Glu181Ly, with two cae of autoomal dominant retiniti pigmentoa (one with rhodopin, Pro23Hi, and one with rhodopin, Cy110Arg) and with a normal control, all of comparable age. METHOD: All eye were prepared for light and electron microcopy within 6 hour after death. REULT: Extenive photoreceptor degeneration wa revealed in the eye with retiniti pigmentoa. ome macular cone howed membranou wirl only in the eye with rhodopin, Glu181Ly. CONCLUION: The retinal degeneration caued by rhodopin, Glu181Ly, can feature membranou wirl in the inner egment of cone in the macula. Thee wirl have not been reported in other cae of dominant retiniti pigmentoa tudied o far, and their pathogenei remain to be defined.
