  • Abstract
    PURPOE: Antiretroviral therapy ha reduced the morbidity and mortality aociated with human immunodeficiency viru (HIV) infection. However, ide effect are increaingly recognized, including a commonly reported toxic mitochondrial myopathy. We report uch a cae of Leber hereditary optic neuropathy in a patient with antiretroviral therapy for HIV infection and peculate on a poible toxic etiologic role in the development of Leber hereditary optic neuropathy by a hared mitochondrial mechanim METHOD: Cae Report. Bilateral optic dik abnormalitie oberved in a 38-year-old HIV poitive man with a family hitory of Leber hereditary optic neuropathy were documented with fundu photography, color viion teting, and viual field teting. Mitochondrial DNA teting wa ued to confirm the genetic predipoition to Leber hereditary optic neuropathy. REULT: Progreive bilateral optic nerve pallor temporally aociated with the adminitration of antiretroviral medication wa oberved. Diagnotic teting revealed progreive viual field and color viion lo a well a a mitochondrial DNA mutation conitent with Leber hereditary optic neuropathy. CONCLUION: Antiretroviral therapy may be aociated with the onet of Leber hereditary optic neuropathy in genetically predipoed patient.
