Abstract :
PURPOE: To examine the efficacy of vitrectomy with internal limiting membrane removal for retinal detachment reulting from a macular hole in highly myopic eye. METHOD: Eleven conecutive highly myopic eye (11 patient) with retinal detachment reulting from a macular hole were treated by vitrectomy with removal of the internal limiting membrane, which wa tained with indocyanine green and ulfur hexafluoride ga injection. Potoperatively, the patient were intructed to remain prone for 2 week. The excied pecimen were evaluated with tranmiion electron microcopy. REULT: The mean potoperative follow-up wa 9.2 ± 2.3 month (range, 7 to 13 month). In 10 of the 11 eye (91%) the retina wa reattached during the initial urgery. Redetachment occurred in one eye, which wa uccefully treated during the econd urgery. Bet-corrected viual acuity improved in all eye and ranged from 20/400 to 20/50. Pathologic examination howed that the internal limiting membrane and epiretinal tiue were preent in all pecimen. CONCLUION: The ue of indocyanine green taining can facilitate removal of a macular internal limiting membrane and overlying epiretinal membrane, reulting in complete relief of the macular traction. Primary removal of the internal limiting membrane may contribute to a high initial ucce rate for retinal reattachment and be an important adjuvant to the treatment of retinal detachment reulting from a macular hole in highly myopic eye
