Abstract
PURPOE: To determine the effect of human immunodeficiency viru (HIV) infection on topographic meaure of the optic dik and the retinal nerve fiber layer.
METHOD: A cro-ectional tudy at the Acquired Immunodeficiency yndrome (AID) Ocular Reearch Unit at the Univerity of California, an Diego. Retinal nerve fiber layer thickne at the optic nerve head wa evaluated uing the Heidelberg Retinal Tomograph, a confocal canning laer tomograph in 38 HIV-poitive and 24 age-matched HIV-negative ubject.
REULT: HIV-poitive patient without CMV retiniti howed ignificant difference from HIV-negative normal control in a number of meaure of the retinal nerve fiber layer. Thi indicated a lo of retinal ganglion cell in HIV-poitive patient without retiniti. HIV-poitive patient with CMV retiniti were wore in mot meaurement than both HIV-negative control and HIV-poitive patient without CMV.
CONCLUION: ignificant thinning of the retinal nerve fiber layer occur in HIV-poitive patient without infectiou retinopathy, and there are further change in the optic dik aociated with CMV retiniti. Confocal canning laer tomography may be of ue in the diagnoi of early HIV-aociated viual function lo.
