Abstract :
PURPOE: To examine the efficacy of amniotic membrane tranplantation in the treatment of deep corneal and cleral ulcer.
PATIENT: A total of 11 patient were recruited for thi tudy: four patient (four eye) with corneal perforation, five patient (five eye) with a deep corneal ulcer and decemetocele, and two patient (two eye) with a cleral ulcer.
METHOD: Ulcer were treated by amniotic membrane tranplantation. eparate amniotic membrane were tranplanted a material to fill the tromal layer (amniotic membrane filling), a a baement membrane (amniotic membrane graft), and a a wound cover (amniotic membrane patch). After urgery, all cae were treated with artificial tear, autologou erum drop, antibiotic eyedrop, topical corticoteroid, and odium hyaluronate eyedrop.
REULT: Eight eye (72.7%) healed with epithelialization in 16.5 ± 8.0 day (range, 7 to 29 day), with five and three eye howing corneal epithelialization and conjunctival epithelialization, repectively. A peritent epithelial defect wa noted in one eye with corneal ulcer after limbal allograft tranplantation for a chemical burn and in two eye with corneal ulcer a a complication of rheumatoid arthriti.
CONCLUION: Multilayered amniotic membrane tranplantation may be effective for the treatment of deep ulceration of the cornea and clera. In ome eye with total corneal limbal dyfunction or autoimmune diorder, amniotic membrane tranplantation alone i not effective
